How to test your speakers and headphones
Turn your volume up a little, then play Left and Right and notice which side each one arrives from. Play both and it should sit in the middle. A headphone test tells you more than a speaker test does, because two speakers on a desk both reach both of your ears.
Questions
Does this record anything?
No. The page only sends sound out, and asks for no permission at all. The names in the Output list come from your browser, and they stay blank until you have allowed a microphone or camera somewhere, which is why they can appear as anonymous numbered entries.
Why can’t I hear anything?
Work down the obvious list, because it is nearly always on it. Volume up and not muted. The right output chosen, here and in your system settings. Headphones pushed all the way in, since a half seated plug kills one side or both. And check the tab itself, by right clicking it and looking for Unmute site.
Why is sound only coming from one side?
Play each side here and see whether the quiet one is truly silent. If it is, the usual causes are a balance slider pushed to one end in your system sound settings, a damaged cable, or a plug not fully in. On headphones there is a quicker answer. Swap them left to right. If the silence follows the headphone it is the headphone, and if it stays put it is the computer.
Why can’t I change the output device?
This page can only move the sound where the browser lets it, which today means Chrome and Edge. In Firefox and Safari the Output list is hidden, so change the output in your system sound settings and the page follows along.
