How to test your mouse
Press every button once, including the two on the side, and scroll both ways. Each one lights while you hold it and stays marked once it has been seen. Click the symbol beside any button your mouse does not have so the count can finish. Click each one a few times as well, because a double click fault only shows itself when a single press arrives twice. Then move the mouse around for a moment, since a mouse test can only measure how often yours reports while it is actually moving.
Questions
Do you record what I click?
No. Nothing is sent anywhere and nothing is stored. The page keeps which buttons have arrived, and the report lists them in the order they sit on the mouse rather than the order you pressed them. All of it goes when you close the tab.
Why is my side button not registering?
Three reasons. Your mouse may not have one, in which case click the symbol beside it and it drops out of the count. The browser may be using it to go back, which this page stops so the button can be tested, though only on this page. Or the button is mapped to something by your mouse’s own software, which sends that instead of a button press.
Why does my mouse double click when I click once?
The switch inside is worn. Its contacts bounce as they close, so one press leaves as two, and it gets worse as it ages. The readings here name the button and how many milliseconds apart the two presses landed. Anything under twenty milliseconds is not a hand, because no finger clicks twice that fast.
What is a good number of reports per second?
An ordinary mouse reports 125 times a second and a gaming one 1000, with a few going higher. More is not better for most people. Past about 500 the difference is beyond noticing outside a game, and the number matters far less than whether it holds steady.
Why does it say Not reported for reports per second?
Because your browser hands the page one movement per frame instead of every sample the mouse sent. Counting those would measure your screen, so a 1000 report mouse would read 60 and look broken. Rather than print that, the page says nothing. Chrome, Edge and Firefox give the full set.
Can I test a touchpad or trackpad?
Yes, for what it has. Click and right click both register, and two finger scrolling arrives as scroll. There are no side buttons to test, because the back and forward gestures are performed by your operating system, which navigates without the browser ever seeing a button. Click those three out and the count reaches the end.
Why can’t I check my mouse DPI here?
Because a browser only knows how many pixels the pointer moved, never how far your hand moved the mouse. Working out DPI needs that physical distance, which means measuring your desk with a ruler and trusting the result. A number built on that is a guess with a decimal point.
Why doesn’t the right click menu open on this page?
It is held back on purpose, along with the back and forward buttons. Otherwise the menu would cover the test the moment you tried the right button, and the side buttons would navigate away from it. Every other page behaves normally.
