How to test your microphone
Allow the prompt and it starts. Talk, and the level moves. If you have several microphones, check the right one is chosen under Input, because the wrong one looks exactly like a broken mic. Then record a clip and play it back, which is the only way to hear what everyone else does. A microphone test that only draws a moving bar tells you the browser can hear something, not how you sound. To compare two microphones, record with one, switch under Input, and record again. Both clips stay, so you can play them back to back.

Do you record or upload my voice?
No. Everything is measured inside your browser, and any clip you record stays in the tab on your own machine. Nothing reaches a server, and closing the page discards it. If you download a clip or a report, your browser writes the file directly to your device.
Why is my microphone not working?
Four things cause this, and a broken microphone is the rarest. The browser was never given permission, which this page says outright. Another app has the device open, usually Zoom, Teams or Discord, which it also says. It is muted, which shows here as digital silence rather than a quiet room. Or the wrong input is chosen, which no page can know, so check the name under Input.
How do I allow microphone access?
On a computer, click the padlock at the left of the address bar and set Microphone to Allow, then reload. On an iPhone there is no padlock, and the browser app itself needs permission before any website can ask. Open Settings, scroll to Safari, Chrome or Brave, and turn Microphone on. On Android, use the browser menu, then Site settings, then Microphone. If you refused once, the browser remembers and will not ask again until you change it there.
Why do I sound quiet on calls?
Usually the input slider in your system sound settings. Raise it, check nothing has muted it, and move closer. Distance does more than the slider, because moving closer lifts your voice without lifting the room with it.
Why do I sound muffled or far away?
Almost always distance, or something between you and the microphone. On a headset the boom arm gets pushed out of the way and never put back. On a laptop, people sit further back than they think. Record a clip here and play it back, because muffled is one of the faults you cannot hear while you are talking.
Why does my voice sound robotic or cut out?
Three causes. Noise suppression working too hard and taking parts of your voice with the noise. A computer busy enough to drop audio. Or a Bluetooth headset, which switches to a much lower quality mode the moment its microphone is used.
Why does it say one channel when my microphone is stereo?
Because echo cancellation mixes the two sides into one before the page ever sees them, and it is on by default. Your hardware may well have two channels, but the stream leaving your browser has one, and that is what the reading describes.
Can I test AirPods or a Bluetooth headset?
Yes. Pair the headset first, then choose it under Input. Expect the sample rate to drop, because most Bluetooth headsets fall back to a low quality mono mode as soon as the microphone is used, and that comes from the headset rather than from this page.
